Manager / Head of Construction

Mike Connell

Some people work to live, I live to work.

Mike Connell with Ellie and Daisy

Mike manages all construction related business, deals with all the financials of the company, and works with the team to manage the company. And while this all seems very technical, Mike works hard to keep us all on our feet.

Before starting AKB, he held a General Contractors license in North Caroline, was the general contractor for a 16-million-dollar condo development, and managed all the structural improvements on the Cliff house resort.

Mike has always enjoyed managing a business and helping people with their projects. He strives to create a comfortable environment for his customers and employees and encourages teamwork.

Being the proud father of two amazing girls, he’s learned to work through the aches and pains of life to teach his daughters the hard times don’t matter when you have a strong support system and love what you do.

When he’s not working—which is never—he’s out on the slopes or out in the garage where he lets his creative juices fly while wood working.

Marketing

Kim Connell

Coffee is the nectar of the gods!

Kim Connell

Kim wears many hats at AKB, not only does she see to the ordering of products and organizing of paperwork, she also keeps the showroom in tip-top shape!

One would never know that she used to be a hair stylist and an educator for Paul Mitchell, traveling all over New England visiting salons to teach them about the latest products and techniques. But she couldn’t pass up the opportunity to work hand-in-hand with Mike to build a fun creative business and looks forward to this new exciting chapter.

One thing that Kim shares in common with the rest of the AKB team is her passion for family. She understands how invasive it can feel to have a project done to your house, so she hopes to make our clients feel like they’re part of the family too.

Like most everyone, coffee is a necessity to keep her creative juices flowing, so there’s nary a time you won’t see her with her beloved frozen coffee. Kim loves spending her time outside of work with her husband, her two remarkable daughters, and her two amazing fur babies, Daisy and Ellie. It doesn’t take much to make her happy, all she needs is a power tool. When she’s not at Home Depot looking for her next gadget, she’s either in her gardens, trying out new hairstyles on her daughters, starting a new craft project, or out by her little pond looking for frogs. It’s the little things.

Designer

Kristen LaValle

My daughters have taught me how important it is to celebrate ourselves the way we are!

Kristen LaValle 2

Kristen is our designer at AKB, and if asked, she’d tell you it’s the best and most fun job because she gets to connect with customers and bring their dreams of functional, intuitive, and gorgeous spaces to life! She’s been in the design business for 13 years, in which she’s been published in Maine Home & Design.

Driven by her ambition to take care of people’s needs, Kristen strives to create good design that can also help people live more authentically in their home. She loves forming relationships with others, which is why she loves having the opportunity to bring her skills to the table with people that are so generously allowing AKB into their homes. A connection with people and art is at the heart of it all.

In her short time here, it’s become clear that family is number one for Mike and Kim, and she think it’s no mistake that they found themselves in the kitchen business…the heart of every home and family.

Kristen loves her quirky, unconventional life with her husband Jamie, and two little girls, Quinn and Birdie. When she doesn’t have her hands full with her new baby, she’s obsessing over Australian and Norwegian Interior Design and embroidering her daughters’ drawings.

Her experience with design and construction reaches from interior design to project management. She can do it all.

Web Design / Social Media

Taylor Connell

Most kids don’t get to see who their parents are when they’re at work, there’s just a whole separate side to them that they don’t know. It’s a really neat experience and I’m so grateful I get to have it.

Taylor is the voice you hear in your head when reading the website and blog. She writes the content for both and makes sure everything is up to date, and she also handles some PR related tasks. This coming May, Taylor will be graduating from the University of Southern Maine with a degree in English!

One of her favorite parts about writing is putting a voice behind the words. When writing for the website or blog, she likes creating content that catches the reader’s attention, whether it’s because it’s visually appealing or because they relate to something they read. Being the youngest in the team, Taylor brings fresh ideas to the office. She’s able to connect with and represent the younger generations who will soon be moving into their own homes.

Aside from family, Taylor values perspective, and not in the sense of problem solving, although that’s also important. She understands the importance of seeing things from others’ perspectives and is always trying to see how the customer or the general public will perceive things.

Taylor loves her family, and even more she loves being part of her family’s business. When she’s not doing schoolwork, she has her nose in a book—probably an FBI thriller—as if reading for school isn’t enough.
